Robco is a century-old company offering sealing solutions for all industrial applications involving piping, valves, pumps, mixers, boilers, tanks, furnaces, crucibles and parts that require customized seals or packings, commonly known as 'gaskets' or 'packing'.

In heavy industries (pulp and paper, lithium mining, iron and other metals, etc.), large quantities of water are used to cool and lubricate rotating equipment such as pumps, agitators, mixers, refiners, pulpers, and more. This large volume of water is distributed randomly throughout the process, making its management complex and requiring significant amounts of energy for its subsequent extraction. The sealing components that seal this industrial equipment are often exposed to harsh environments that accelerate their deterioration, and their condition is difficult to monitor. Poor performance of these seals leads to inefficient use of water and energy, as well as the premature replacement of worn parts.

Challenges

Robco's challenge was to minimize cooling water usage while optimizing gasket lifespan and maintenance. The goal was economic, environmental, and regulatory: to use less water and reduce maintenance and failure-related costs.

Solution

In collaboration with Robco, Vooban developed a predictive and prescriptive maintenance solution. This project enables the company to create a new product that complements its existing solutions.

The first model provides real-time information about the state of each gasket and the water pressure injected, which are two crucial pieces of information for predicting and achieving the optimal balance between the amount of cooling water required and the operating temperature of the gasket. Using a measurement box installed on the rotating equipment and connected to various sensors, machine operation data can be transmitted in real time to employees. This information can be viewed on a dashboard and accessed anytime via a wireless network. Additionally, all the accumulated data will contribute to improving the performance of the gaskets, making them even more competitive against their main American competitors.

The second model focuses on prescriptive maintenance. In addition to predicting the operating condition of the sealing components, the technology can recommend specific maintenance actions to prevent leaks or failures, thus extending the equipment’s lifespan. Essentially, the system instructs operators to adjust water pressure, tighten a gasket that may cause leakage, or loosen it to prevent excessive friction.

Results

By deploying this solution at its clients’ sites, Robco enables a reduction of up to 30% in water losses at the sealing components. This can represent more than 500K litres of water saved per plant daily.
